Dare Obasanjo on Google's cancellation of side-projects.

Good points. Though I thought that Jaiku and Dodgeball were buy-ins rather than 20% time projects.

Dare's point about GMail Labs isn't really valid; nearly all the labs were built by a small number of GMail engineers. 20% culture is (afaict) very much alive and well. Getting launched and huge is only one motivation for a 20% project; a lot of the time it's about having an itch you really need to scratch.
